Das Gespräch fand statt, bevor das konkret gewordene Interesse von Borussia Dortmund an Mittelfeldspieler Salih Özcan (24) öffentlich wurde. Das Eigengewächs soll für rund fünf Millionen Euro Ablöse wechseln. Eine Summe, die angesichts der zuletzt gezeigten Leistungen des türkischen Nationalspielers vergleichsweise gering klingt. Als sie manifestiert wurde, hätte diese Ablöse allerdings kein Verein für Özcan bezahlt. Dessen Entwicklung unter Trainer Steffen Baumgart macht ihn nun für den BVB zum Schnäppchen.
Es heißt, die Energiekosten am Geißbockheim steigen seit gut vier Wochen, weil in Ihrem Büro bis immer mindestens 22 Uhr das Licht brennt. Ist der Überblick bald hergestellt?
Noch nicht so weit, wie ich es mir vorgestellt habe.
Because?
Weil ich tagsüber viel Zeit damit verbringe, Gespräche zu führen. Das geht oft nicht in 20 Minuten. Ich habe mit jedem Spieler persönlich gesprochen. Das ging bei jungen Spielern mitunter etwas schneller, mit den erfahreneren Jungs habe ich mich teils bis zu eineinhalb Stunden unterhalten. Diese Zeit wollte ich mir unbedingt nehmen. Dazu habe ich mich mit jedem Abteilungsleiter zusammengesetzt und bei jedem Gremium vorgestellt, und natürlich schon verschiedene Gremiensitzungen mitgemacht. Das ist alles sehr wichtig, aber natürlich keine Zeit, in der ich produktiv arbeite. Deshalb dauert die Einarbeitung im Detail noch ein bisschen.
Sie sind ein akribischer Chef?
Ja, würde ich schon sagen.
Gerne mal laut? Oder eher der emphatische Typ?
Ich regele Dinge gerne auf der Sachebene. Wenn ich laut werde, dann ist es so mittelmäßig gelaufen. Und wenn jemand gar nicht so will, wie ich es mir vorstelle, dann muss ich nicht mehr laut werden – es reichen wenige ruhige, aber unmissverständlich vorgetragene Worte.
Wie hat Köln Sie empfangen?
Freundlich, offen, hilfsbereit. Ich bin sehr angetan.
Wie empfinden Sie die Unterschiede zu Jahn Regensburg?
Es gibt viel mehr Personal, viel mehr Gremien, deshalb auch mehr Abstimmungsbedarf. Aber das war mir ebenso bewusst wie die Tatsache, dass der Klub teilweise Themenfelder bearbeitet, die es in Regensburg gar nicht gab.

Hier gibt es zum Beispiel eine Abteilung Unternehmensentwicklung. Was von den Kollegen an Innovationen präsentiert wird, das war auf dem Entwicklungsstand des SSV Jahn mitunter noch nicht relevant.
Wie weit sind Sie noch Lernender und wie weit bereits Entscheider?1
Im Sport entscheide ich.
Sie saßen während der Heimspiele auf der Pressetribüne. Sitzen Sie gerne unter Fachleuten?
(lacht) Es ist ruhig dort, man sieht gut. Jörg Jakobs hat mir den Tipp gegeben, wir sitzen nebeneinander. Das ist optimal. Ich hoffe, den Platz darf ich behalten.
Bei Ihrer Vorstellungs-Pressekonferenz nannten Sie die Teilnahme am internationalen Wettbewerb “die Kirsche auf der Sahne”. Nun warten Dreifachbelastung, Reisestress, ein möglicherweise frustrierendes Ausscheiden in den Play-offs. Ist möglicherweise noch ein Kern in der Kirsche, an dem man sich böse verschlucken kann?
Grundsätzlich versuche ich, in Chancen zu denken. Bei mir ist das Glas immer halbvoll. Es gibt keine Alternative zum Optimismus für mich. Es ist doch cool, international zu spielen – auch für mich persönlich, ich erlebe das das erste Mal. Auch für das gesamte Trainerteam ist das eine Premiere. Wir freuen uns alle drauf und schauen, wie weit wir kommen.
Ganz Köln lechzt förmlich nach der Vertragsverlängerung mit Steffen Baumgart und seinem Team. Wie weit sind die Gespräche?
Wir haben uns zusammengesetzt und unsere Positionen ausgetauscht. Erfreulicherweise waren sie identisch. Steffen hat ein klares Bekenntnis abgegeben, dass er die Aufgabe hier fortführen möchte. Und ich habe dann in Stellvertretung aller FC-Verantwortlichen gesagt, dass wir ebenfalls weitermachen möchten. Jetzt geht es darum, dass in eine Form zu gießen. Es ist absolut positiv, dass Steffen genauso auf die kommenden Aufgaben blickt wie wir.
Die vergangene Saison darf nicht überdecken, dass uns noch die Substanz fehlt, regelmäßig in einem europäischen Wettbewerb zu landen.

Mittelfristig werden wir uns als Entwicklungsklub positionieren müssen.

Ein Verein, der im Regelfall Spieler holt, die noch nicht den großen Namen in der Bundesliga haben und dort noch keinen Qualitätsnachweis erbracht haben. Spieler, die vielleicht aus unteren Ligen kommen oder in der Bundesliga im Kader standen, aber nur wenig gespielt haben. Diese Spieler entsprechend nach vorne zu bringen, sie zu entwickeln, das ist unsere Kernaufgabe.
Rückschläge sind einkalkuliert?
Sie gehören dazu. Trotzdem wollen wir sie im besten Fall natürlich vermeiden.
What is the sporting objective?
First of all, the past season must not cover up that we currently still lack the substance to regularly end up in a European competition. This is neither financially nor infrastructure. So we don’t go into the season and say we want to be seventh or better. We want to continue to stabilize our performance. In numbers: We want to get 40 points as soon as possible and then we’ll see how many games can still be played afterwards.

In terms of external appearance, they differ greatly from the trainer. Do the opposites put on or sometimes fly the sparks?
We haven’t known each other for that long. Let’s put it this way: If we played with Regensburg against Paderborn, he was not my favorite opponent on the sidelines during the game (laughs). But before and after the game I always found Steffen extremely pleasant because he is very different than it seems public. A reflected person who is looking for and accepts feedback. And if the emotions are smoky after the game, it analyzes clearly and factually. We don’t differ so much.
He is not a trainer who exerts pressure on the club and constantly demands new players. How important is it to have a trainer who thinks economically?
It is brutally important that the trainer says that things are as they are. And then tries to make the best of it. Steffen is a soccer teacher and sees his most important task in helping players to get better. From top player to number 27 in the squad. I think that makes a top coach.
From this aspect you can also see the obligation of the Hanoverian Linton Maina?
Linton is a potential player, a developing player who has qualities who have to be enough to speak objectively to constantly prevail at first division level. It is fast, can run the depth and go to one against 1. He is dangerous for this.
What he showed too rarely…
Linton has development fields that we have clearly discussed with him and on which he will work together with the coaching team.
There he should now have the right trainer.

Did you name the path taken without alternative? How so?
So that we do not drive against the wall financially. The handbrake is dressed, but we still roll. Our task is to make FC healthy again in the medium term and powerful at all levels.
You spoke of the necessary savings, 12 million euros are a lot of wood. How does that work?
I can’t promise that it will succeed. On the one hand, we will get cheap players, on the other hand we will hand in one or the other player. But we will nobody go out here. This does not correspond to my idea of leadership. If you behave correctly, you will be treated correctly. This also includes showing their perspective transparently. Then everyone has to decide for themselves whether they want to go the way with us – even at the risk of not playing so much.

For Tony Modeste?
Its sporting status is undisputed. We have a lump formation with the goal scorers. A big lump is from Tony. And a few little ones. It’s great to have a player who hits so often. But it would be good if you had a few next to it, scoring eight to twelve goals. We don’t have them yet. But I think Mark Uth is good for eight to twelve goals. As for Tony, we want him to stay. Not only because of the goals, also because it is important for the cabin. He knows that we want to hold it. But he also knows that we are currently unable to extend his contract.

We have never communicated a specific number – and also didn’t talk internally. Regardless of this, each club has a salary limit. The only question remains how high it is. What we don’t have here is a clear salary structure.
What should that look like?
Formulated very banally: there are top performers who are at the top of the structure. Then comes the center building, including the potential players and hope. For each category there is a range of how you can afford it. This is not the case here. Here some hopes of hope is already paid for like a top performer. And that’s not a healthy structure.
