PS5 hackers find vulnerability and gain unencrypted firmware

The hacker group Fail0Verflow has now managed to make a first step for decrypting the firmware of the PS5. But not the hacker group could make use of the vulnerability, also Andy Nguyen alias the flow, which is itself Security developer at Google, was able to penetrate deeper into the system and bring new insights into the PS5.

What happened? On Twitter, the hacker group Fail0Verflow releases an image of a disclosed unencrypted hex dump of the PS5, i.e. data of the hexadecimal number system. The group indicates that you have access to all Symmetric root keys of the PS5, which are responsible for accessing the unencrypted firmware:

And what should this be done? The symmetrical root keys are important because they allow hackers to decrypt all the files including the firmware of the PS5. This means that it could sometime the hackers possible to start their own software or illegal beds of PS titles on the console.

In addition, it is now possible for the group to evaluate all firmware updates and so for example to see future Features of the PS5 in advance. Although the hacker group has no complete access to the PS5 console, but with this step it has succeeded in penetrating very far into the PS5 system.

What is so special? The hacker has managed to unlock the debug menu of the PS5. The debug menu is actually intended only for game developers teams who want to get more information about hardware and software to adapt their games to it.

But in the comments, Nguyen has already reaffirmed that he had no intentions to publish exploit. Presumably, he will have already pointed Sony to the vulnerability so that the developer team can seek a solution for it.

Until the console is completely decrypted, it will probably take a while. However, the hacker group Fail0Verflow is professionals, so we can assume that they will not be loose with the decryption of the PS5.
